  • In Water: Use a shallow dish without drainage holes. Add 2 to 3 inches of pebbles or glass beads, nestle the bulbs pointy side up, and add water so it just touches the base of the bulbs. Don’t submerge them.

    In Soil: Use a pot with drainage holes. Fill it halfway with potting mix, set the bulbs close together, and cover them so the top third stays exposed.

    Light and Temperature: Start in a cool, dark spot (about 50 to 60°F) for 7 to 10 days while roots form. Then move to bright, indirect light at about 60 to 70°F. Turn the pot regularly to keep stems straight.

    Watering: Keep soil lightly moist, or keep water level at the base of the bulbs. Never let bulbs sit in standing water, which causes rot.

    Support: Stems can get tall and floppy. Stake them with twine or use a taller container.

    After Blooming: Paperwhites forced indoors usually don’t bloom again, so you can compost them, or plant them outdoors if you live in a mild climate (zones 8 and up).

    When it arrives
    Unpack your bulb right away. Pot it up within a few days for the fastest bloom. If you can’t plant it right away, keep it in a cool, dry spot out of direct sun.
