South African Amaryllis Care & Timing

Plant indoors in fall or early winter for midwinter blooms, or outdoors in spring if you’re in a warm climate.

Choose a bright, warm spot with indirect sunlight, sunny windowsills work well, just avoid harsh, direct rays.

When potting, leave the top third to half of the bulb above the soil. A loose, well-draining mix is best, and a little warmth at the base of the pot (around 70–77°F) helps the bulb wake up faster.

Water sparingly until you see growth, then keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy. During active growth, feed every 2-4 weeks with a low-nitrogen, high-potassium liquid fertilizer.

Once the tall flower stalks appear, you might need to stake them for support. After the blooms fade, snip off the spent flowers but leave the foliage; it’s what nourishes the bulb for next year.

When the leaves die back, reduce watering and let the bulb rest in a cool, dark spot for a 8-12 weeks before replanting. With the right care, it’ll return for another round of winter color.
