From Old Shed To Cozy Scandi Den
Shortly after purchasing our Upstate farm house we started to discover all the things the housing inspector missed. The biggest and most costly being the stream of water that poured from the ceiling when it rained. How does a housing inspector not notice a roof that was missing shingles and needed complete replacing we will never understand. This meant it was time to replace the whole roof and to decide what we should do with the mid-century addition added to the back of the original home. The uninsulated glorified shed had been used as a storage space by the previous owner and blocked the view of the backyard. It also lead to a screened-in porch that need to be demolished.
We decided transform the unused space in to a cozy den outfitted with a Supreme Novo 24 Wood Burning Stove and Hem daybed to accommodate extra guests. We first had to rebuild the back north wall added raw wood beams milled by a local mill. We also opted to install a larger picture window that was gifted to us by our contractor. We tiled the west stove wall with white square tiles and black grout to complement the new black painted wood floors. On the east wall we carved out a small area to become our future mud room and entrance from the drive way and side porch.
The former storage space has become one of the most loved rooms of the house. It’s a great space to sit by the fire while reading a book in the winter with a beautiful view of the woods and neighboring farm were deer love to graze.
